Iron Tablets for Anemia

Did you know that approximately 10 million people in the United States have an iron deficiency?

This deficiency is most commonly caused by anemia and can make you feel tired or weak. Luckily, taking iron supplements can help you feel brand new.

Read our guide to iron tablets dosage for anemia.

How to Take Iron Tablets

Iron tablets should be taken on an empty stomach preferably with water. However, you could wash it down with fruit juice too. A good plan of action is to take your iron tablet around an hour or two after eating a meal.

Side effects of iron tablets can include an upset stomach. If this is the case for you, it may be best to take your supplement with food or right after you eat a meal.

The safest way to use iron tablets is by following the instructions per your healthcare provider if you are prescribed iron. If you are treating yourself with drugstore brand iron tablets or iron tablets from Vitabiotics, be sure to follow the packaging instructions. If you have been taking iron for longer than two months and feel like you need more, check with your healthcare provider before upping the dosage.

Along with chewable iron tablets, there are liquid forms. If you take the liquid form for anemia, it could cause teeth stains. Luckily, there are ways to reduce or prevent the stains from occurring.

Instead of taking a liquid form of iron without anything, you can mix the dose in water, tomato juice, or fruit juice. Straws are helpful to keep the supplement from getting on your teeth.

If you have to take your supplement with a dropper, place it on the back of your tongue and follow it with a drinkable liquid. If you end up getting iron stains on your teeth, it can get removed by brushing with baking soda.

Iron Tablets Dosage

The iron tablets dosage will depend on the patient. Generally, a doctor will order you to follow the directions on the label as they have prescribed something strong enough for your anemia.

The amount you take will depend on the strength of the medicine and the number of doses you take every day. Unless differently stated by your doctor, there are recommendations for iron tablets dosage and other oral forms of iron.

Adult and teenage males can take 10 milligrams (mg) per day while adult and teenage females can take 10 to 15 mg per day. Those who are pregnant can take 30 mg per day, but women who are breast-feeding only need 15 mg per day.

Children have different iron tablets dosage but can take them safely. Kids between the ages of 4 and 10 can take 10 mg per day. Babies after birth and up to three years can take 6 to 10 mg per day.

Making the Most of Iron Tablets

Understanding iron tablets and how they can help anemia is the first step in taking supplements safely. Although you can treat yourself with iron, it is recommended to speak to a healthcare professional about the correct iron tablets dosage for you.
